GFS rainfall data is a forecast of expected precipitation over a given area for a specific period of time. It can be used to help predict and plan for potential flooding, drought, and other weather-related events. Rainfall data is usually presented in the form of precipitation accumulation, which is the total amount of precipitation that is expected to fall over a given area during a specific time period in millimeters. Time period of 24 hours starts from 0300 UTC of the previous date and ends at 0300 UTC of the selected date.
Clouds 24 Hr. shows predicted percentage of the sky covered by convective clouds which are formed by the vertical movement of air in the atmosphere and are associated with thunderstorms and other types of severe weather. The charts use shading from black to white with whiter shade depicting more intensity of convection on a scale ranging between 0 to 1.
In northern hemisphere, vorticity is +ve for cyclonic rotation (associated with convergence); –ve for anticyclonic rotation (associated with divergence). The Low-Level Vorticity, typically presented in units of 10^-5 s^-1, is typically displayed with warm colors ranging from shades of red (to yellow) indicating positive vorticity (cyclonic rotation), and cool colors shades of green (to blue) indicating negative vorticity (anticyclonic rotation). These charts help identifying areas of high and low vorticity, which can be associated with weather systems such as fronts, lows, and highs. It enables the weather forecasters to analyze and understand the behavior of weather systems in making more accurate predictions about future meteorological conditions. Signs of vorticity are opposite in the southern hemisphere.
Low level convergence is the measure of vorticity at 850 hPa and is the tendency of an air particle to rotate or circulate around a particular point at that level. Convergence of air at any level means air is being brought in towards a location and to compensate for this, air ascends to higher levels in the troposphere (ascent) and/or air descends to lower levels in the troposphere (subsidence). Where there is ascent of air there is a tendency to develop cloud and precipitation. Where there is descent of air there is a tendency for clearance of cloud.
Vorticity is an important concept in meteorology because it is a key factor in the formation and intensification of weather systems such as cyclones, anticyclones, and thunderstorms. The charts are typically presented in units of 10^-5 s^-1, which represents the change in rotation per unit time and unit length. In northern hemisphere positive vorticity values indicate counterclockwise (cyclonic) rotation, while negative values indicate clockwise (anticyclonic) rotation. Signs of vorticity become opposite in the southern hemisphere. Upper-Level Vorticity Charts are useful tools for meteorologists and weather forecasters to analyze and track these systems, and to make predictions about their future behavior.
The upper level divergence is the measure of vorticity at 200 hPa depicting the magnitude and direction of horizontal rotation of the atmosphere in the upper levels. It is typically displayed in color, with warm colors such as red and yellow indicating positive vorticity (cyclonic rotation), and cool colors such as blue and green indicating negative vorticity (anticyclonic rotation). Isolines, or lines of equal vorticity, are also included on the charts to help identify areas of high and low vorticity, which can be associated with weather systems such as troughs, ridges, and jet streams. By combining the information from the Low-Level Convergence and the Upper-Level Divergence, meteorologists can gain complete understanding of the structure and behavior of weather systems in the atmosphere.
Upper Air Wind at 200 hPa refers to the predicted wind direction and speed at a pressure level of 200 hPa, which is located in the upper troposphere (approximately 12 kilometers or 7.5 miles above the Earth's surface). The winds are presented knots (kt), and the direction is given in degrees from true north. Jet streams are marked in shades of green for winds with magnitude of more than 60 kt. It is an important parameter that is used by meteorologists to analyze the atmospheric circulation patterns and predict the movement of weather systems. The wind at this level is often referred to as the & jet stream which is a narrow band of high-speed winds that can influence weather patterns over large areas. The depiction also shows the temperature along with the wind barb on the grid points at 200 hPa.
Upper Air Wind at 500 hPa refers to the predicted wind direction and speed at a pressure level of 500 hPa, which is located in the upper troposphere about 5.5 km above the Earth’s surface. The winds are presented in knots (kt), and the direction is given in degrees from true north. Winds with magnitude of more than 40 kt are marked in shades of green. It provides important information to meteorologists in forecasting weather patterns, including the movement and intensification of storms, the development of weather fronts, and the location and strength of high and low pressure systems. The depiction also shows the temperature along with the wind barb on the grid points at 500 hPa.
Upper Air Wind at 700 hPa refers to the predicted wind direction and speed at a pressure level of 700 hPa, which is located in the middle troposphere (approximately 3,000 meters or 10,000 feet above the Earth’s surface). The winds are presented in knots (kt), and the direction is given in degrees from true north. Winds with magnitude of more than 20 kt are marked in shades of red. It provides important information to meteorologists to study atmospheric dynamics and weather patterns. At this level, the wind speed and direction can influence the movement and development of weather systems such as storms, fronts, and high-pressure systems. The depiction also shows the temperature along with the wind barb on the grid points at 700 hPa.
Upper Air Wind at 850 hPa refers to the predicted wind direction and speed at a pressure level of 850 hPa, which is located in the lower troposphere (approximately 1,500 meters or 5,000 feet above the Earth’s surface). The winds are presented in knots (kt), and the direction is given in degrees from true north. Winds with magnitude of more than 20 kt are marked in shades of red. It is an important level for weather forecasting because it is close to the Earth’s surface and is strongly influenced by surface features such as mountains, valleys, and bodies of water.Meteorologists can gain insights into the strength and direction of wind flow in the lower troposphere, which can affect the movement of weather systems and the transport of heat, moisture, and pollutants in the atmosphere. The depiction also shows the temperature along with the wind barb on the grid points at 850 hPa.
MSLP charts typically show a color-coded contour map of atmospheric pressure at sea level, with lines of equal pressure (isobars) indicating areas of high and low pressure over a geographic area. Meteorologists use these charts to identify areas of high and low pressure, which can give indications of weather patterns such as the likelihood of storms, cold fronts, or warm fronts. The MSLP charts are also useful in identifying areas of convergence and divergence in the atmosphere, which can influence the formation of weather systems.
2m Temperature data is widely used by meteorologists, climatologists, and other researchers to study and forecast weather conditions. The data is usually provided in gridded format, with values available at regular intervals over a geographic region, typically covering the entire globe. 2m Temperature data can be used for a variety of applications, such as predicting the onset of heatwaves or cold spells, forecasting temperature trends, and studying the impact of weather on various systems and processes.
Maximum Temperature depicts the highest temperatures at 2m above the ground surface between 0300 UTC of the previous date to 0300 UTC of the required date. This is an important variable for weather forecasting, as it determines the conditions at the Earth’s surface during the warmest part of the date, affecting human activities, agriculture, and the environment.
Minimum Temperature depicts the lowest temperatures at 2m above the ground surface between 0300 UTC of the previous date to 0300 UTC of the required date. It is a key factor in defining the conditions at the Earth’s surface during the coldest part of the date that impacts human activities, agriculture, and the environment.
Meteogram is a type of weather forecast graphic that displays predicted meteorological data over time for a particular location. In a Meteogram, various meteorological parameters such as temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, cloud cover, and humidity are displayed on a graph over time. The horizontal axis typically represents the forecast period, ranging from a few hours to several days, while the vertical axis represents the values of the meteorological parameter being forecast. Meteograms can be useful for a wide range of applications, including aviation, agriculture, transportation, and outdoor activities. They provide a convenient way to quickly visualize and interpret complex weather data, allowing users to make informed decisions based on the latest weather information.
